The Sindh government has adjusted school timings across the province in response to an ongoing cold wave, aiming to reduce students’ exposure to harsh early-morning temperatures. Under the revised schedule, all public and private schools will begin classes at 9:00 am, while dismissal times will remain unchanged.

The change will be implemented from January 12 through January 26, following a noticeable drop in temperatures in multiple districts. Education officials say the decision is a precautionary step focused on student well-being during colder mornings, particularly for younger children who travel early and often rely on public transport.

The adjustment was approved by the provincial education leadership after reviewing weather conditions and reports of intensifying cold across Sindh. While schools will remain open, authorities have advised institutions to ensure classrooms are adequately prepared for winter conditions and to allow flexibility for students facing weather-related difficulties.

This approach differs from that of Punjab, where the government has opted to extend winter holidays for educational institutions due to severe cold. Punjab officials cited student health concerns and public feedback as key factors behind their decision.

Meanwhile, Karachi has recorded its coldest temperatures of the current winter, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department. The lowest reading so far was observed at Jinnah International Airport, where temperatures fell to 7.1°C, underscoring the unusual severity of this season’s cold spell.

Parents are encouraged to ensure children are dressed warmly and follow school advisories as cold conditions are expected to persist over the coming weeks.
